'Learning by seeing, seeing by doing'
United Network of Young Peacebuilders' main activities are advocacy and capacity building in the field of peacebuilding. The organisation advocates for the role of youth in peacebuilding, and more specifically to promote the visibility and recognition of youth active in peacebuilding, promote partnership between young peacebuilders and other stakeholders, involve youth in campaigning for a culture of peace and to encourage them to voice their opinions and concerns in forums.
A job shadowing/ capacity building exchange between members of the United Network of Young Peacebuilders network has been a shared thought for 1,5 years amongst members of the network. The need was born out of the wish to work together and develop network-wide global youth initiatives to promote peace, youth participation and youth wellbeing. Meetings between members during trainings and international conferences are currently being utilized to build such joint initiatives. However, misunderstandings and difficulties between project partners arise due to lack of knowledge of the working realities of the partners in a project.
Therefore, the ability to truly get acquainted with the work of a partner and to fully understand their reality is better realized via job shadowing than during a meeting at a conference or training. Furthermore, the United Network of Young Peacebuilders Internship Programme at the office and the experience of member organisations with international volunteers have shown that taking part in the local activities of an organisation and seeing first-hand the daily work of an organisation are a powerful and stimulating way of analysing the best practices and successes of a youth organisation. Such learning can be taken home by a youth leader to his/her own organisation to be multiplied.
This project was developed and carried forward by many youth active in the network. It will help improve future international youth projects and strengthen the existing United Network of Young Peacebuilders network.
