Peacebuilding Commission (PBC) Ambassadorial-level meeting of the Guinea-Bissau Configuration of the PBC - 10 May 2017
The Ambassadorial-level meeting of the Guinea-Bissau Configuration of the Peacebuilding Commission on 10 May 2017, was chaired by Mr. Mauro Vieira, Chair of the Peacebuilding Commission (PBC) Guinea-Bissau Configuration. It was aimed at updating the floor on the current situation in Guinea-Bissau (GB) and discussing about the implementation process of the Conakry Agreement. Following the introductory statement by the Chair, Mr. Mauro Vieira, the Permanent Representative of Guinea-Bissau, H.E. Mr. Joao Soares Da Gama, briefed the floor on the situation in GB. The meeting was also attended by Mr. Oscar Fernandez-Taranco, Assistant Secretary-General (ASG) for the Peacebuilding Support Office (PBSO) and H.E. Ms. Gail Farngalo, Permanent Representative of the Mission of Liberia, Chair of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) who presented statements. The Chair acknowledged the participation at the meeting of Mr. Modibo Touré, the Secretary-General and Head of United Nations Integrated Peacebuilding Office in Guinea-Bissau (UNIOGBIS), via teleconference and Ms. Maria do Carmo Silveira, Executive Secretary of the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLC), via phone. They expressed their concerns about the non-implementation of the Conakry Agreement. Given the gravity of the situation, Senegal requested the Security Council to discuss the political deadlock in GB, which could increase the risk of instability and socio-economic deterioration in the country.
