The RCSS Lecture for March 2012 was held on 29th of March, 2012 at RCSS conference room. Dr. Patrick Bratton of Hawaii Pacific University delivered the lecture on "The Future of the US as an Indo-Pacific Maritime Power." The session was well attended by the RCSS members, academics and both military and civil members of the security community in Colombo. The session was chaired by Dr John Gooneratne, a member of the Board of Directors of RCSS and the event was co-ordinated by Mr. Chaminda Hettiarachchi, Associate Director of RCSS. (Photographs)
The RCSS co-hosted the seminar on Strategic Transparency for Retired Missiles along with the Centre for Global Security Research, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, in California. The seminar was held at the Hilton JAIC Residence Colombo from 2-5 April, 2012. The seminar is part of an ongoing larger project on confidence building measures within the strategic community in South Asia. RCSS hosted a roundtable discussion on the Arab Spring and its implications for the region on 18 January 2012 at the RCSS conference room. The discussion was led by Ambassador James Larocco, Director of the Near East South Asia (NESA) Center for Strategic Studies in Washington D.C. Ambassador Larocco has served as an American diplomat more than 35 years and has held key leadership assignments in the Middle Eastern region over the past 15 years. Some of the topics touched upon during the discussion were: enabling factors; the role of the media; implications for the immediate neighbourhood; possible ways ahead and solutions. The roundtable was chaired by Dr. Mallika Joseph and had many distinguished participants including Ambassador Mahbub Uzzaman, the High Commissioner of Bangladesh to Sri Lanka, Ambassador Nihal Rodrigo, Former Sri Lankan Foreign Secretary and Ambassador of Sri Lanka to China and members from the diplomatic community, academics and strategic community in Sri Lanka. The Centre for South Asian Studies (CSAS) in collaboration with the GPPAC South Asia Secretariat organized a roundtable titled "Building Bridges and Promoting People to People Interaction in South Asia"in Kathmandu, Nepal, from 23 to 24 October 2011. The inauguration of the roundtable was held on 23 October and was graced by H.E. Uz. Fathimath Dhiyana Saeed, the Secretary General of SAARC. Click here for more details.
